Project Overview
Islamic Relief began the Orphan Sponsorship Programme in 1992 with 120 orphans.

Orphans are provided with education, lodging, food, clothes and recreation facilities.

Currently, Islamic Relief Bangladesh emphasises community based orphan sponsorship to increase capacity through proper utilisation of all community resources as well as IR resources. In the year 2002 Islamic Relief sponsored 328 orphans.

Problem / Project Background
In Bangladesh orphans from poor and distressed families are deprived of their rights and are forced to survive in destitute conditions, homelessness, neglected and uncared for.

With a view to mitigate their sufferings, and to ensure quality of education, food, health, skills and help them to earn a livelihood like the other segments of the community, IR implemented an orphan sponsorship project in orphanages and in remote communities in different parts of Bangladesh.
This project selected the most deprived and needy orphans through community participation, and household visits by Islamic Relief staff. IR assists the orphans in achieving their potential by improving the well being and the future of the orphans.

IR sponsored 328 orphans for the year 2002 in 5 orphanages and individuals staying with their families in 9 districts of Bangladesh. Of the total 172 are boys and 156 are girls.
